Weatherproofing outdoor furniture

Weatherproofing in Florida is no joke, we typically get into the frigid 40’s at night 😉 So our pool furniture got some TLC today. Not bad for a day’s work. Even in Florida we have to do weatherproofing. We may not have to shovel snow or scrape ice, but we still have tons of rain. And since we don’t have to put away or cover up our outdoor furniture, it stays out all year long. That means it needs some weatherproofing every now and then.   I made these tables last year when the pool was finished. Step-by-step instructions here.

Look at King Louie. He knows he looks good. A few days ago I was out by the pool (don’t ask if I was eating bonbons, stay at home moms find that offensive) and realized that these tables were starting to look a little worse for wear. The sealer that I applied was worn off and the stain was starting to go.

If these tables are going to make it through ‘winter’, I’d better show them a little TLC. I sanded down the top of the table with 80 grit sandpaper until all the little splinters were gone and the surface was smooth.

At this point, I was wondering how this was going to turn out. I mean, there was a serious splinter on this table. It makes the back of my knees sweat just thinking about how bad that could have been. That’s not weird is it? I didn’t think so…

Stainable wood filler to the rescue. You just squeeze it into the space that needs to be filled and once it’s dry you can sand and stain it. Bing Bang Boom.

While the wood filler was drying, I flipped the tables over and spray painted the legs. Since there was a little rust I gave it a once over with some steel wool before painting. Today was warm and less humid than normal so the paint dried in record time. Thank goodness, because I needed to sit and watch my soaps. Kidding. Making sure you are still paying attention.

I’m not sure if you can figure out which board I have stained and which ones haven’t been stained yet…This is a test…you can do it.

Okay, all boards are stained (and apparently the sun went behind a cloud). Don’t they look so much better? To protect the tables for another year, I used Thompson’s WaterSeal Waterproofing Wood Protector – Clear Aerosol. This is as easy as spray-painting. It is so simple There’s no brushing, no puddling–just spraying!

Now I don’t have to worry about the weather or getting gigantic splinters. AND I can sit out here and read through my magazines and drink my coffee and take naps all day long.

You know, because I’m a stay at home mom.

Do you have furniture that could use a little attention before the winter hits? I would love to hear what you all have to do to get ready for winter.
